About the Item
We are pleased to introduce a glazed ceramic vase from the Liao dynasty of China, dating from the 10th century, about 1,000 years ago.
The Liao dynasty was established by the Qidan people, a nomadic people who flourished in northern China from the 10th to 12th centuries. This dynasty, established by the nomadic Qidan people, developed a unique culture different from that of the Tang and Song dynasties, and the aesthetic sensibilities of the people of the steppes were strongly reflected in their pottery, metalware, clothing, and other items. This work is one of the most valuable burial vessels that conveys the Liao culture to the present day.
This jar is one of the most representative of the Liao period. It has a flat decoration resembling a chicken's crest with a hole at the top through which a cord can be threaded. It also has a mouth that stands up straight. The body is rounded from top to bottom, and the shape is constricted from the waist down. This pottery was made in the motif of a leather bag used to store drinks and other items when traveling. It can be said that the unique shape of this pottery reflects the tastes of the nomadic Khitan people. In addition, a photograph of a similar piece was published in an art book and is included as reference material.
The more you look at it, the more you are drawn in by the beauty of its unique form. The glaze is “green glaze,” which was often used in Liao dynasty ceramics, and is finished in a fresh green.
A darker green is also available, but this is a brighter, less heavy glaze.
In addition to this green glaze, white and brown glazes also exist, with green and brown being the most frequently excavated colors and representative of Liao pottery.
The process involves covering the reddish clay with a white slip, applying the glaze over it, and firing. The white underglaze brings out the original color of the glaze, producing beautiful colors and a unique depth and luster. Despite being an excavated piece, the surface remains transparent and shiny, and depending on the angle of the light, the piece looks as if it were made of amber. The texture of the clay skin that can be seen under the glaze is one of the tastes that remind us of the layering of time.
At the base of the mouth, a broken part has been joined with gold.
This is a common repair spot on the same piece of pottery, perhaps because it is prone to breakage.
There is a very small chip on the rim of the mouth.
There is also some glaze peeling on the body, but this was caused by contact with other ceramics in the kiln, which gives us an idea of how it was fired at that time. It is in a good state of preservation for a hikakuteki excavation.
The beauty of the glaze can be clearly seen on this rare Liao period jar.
It has sufficient presence even when displayed as it is, but it also adds elegance and serenity to a space by inserting a single branch or wild flower. This work is made of soft ceramic and may leak if water is directly poured into it. When using it, it is safer to use a separate container inside.
A wooden box for storage is included.
