About the Item
An exceptionally fine quality rare example of an early Bloor period Royal Crown Derby hand painted porcelain Garniture of generous proportions by Thomas Steel. First quarter of the Nineteenth Century, Regency period.
Each vase finely painted on the front of the shield-shaped body with a colorful cluster of Summer Flowers and old-fashioned Roses beneath a gilt neoclassical motif on the waisted neck, affixed on each side with a gilt acanthus leaf-molded handle terminating in a gilt satyr's head and raised on a circular foot and square base.
Condition: Good condition with no restoration, all handles are perfect, there is evidence of surface crazing to top rim of large vase, this is not restoration. Red painted crowned BLOOR DERBY on all bases.
Height: (large vase, an impressive) 11.75" (30cm). Width: (entire including handles) 9.25” (23.5cm). Depth: (at base) 3.5” (9cm).

Thomas Steel 1772-1850 is considered the very best 19th Century porcelain painter of fruits. He was born in Staffordshire in 1772 and was first apprenticed by Wedgwood. He moved to Derby in 1815, where he became the foremost flower and fruit painter. In 1825 he moved on to the Rockingham factory in Yorkshire, and a few years later to Minton in Staffordshire, where he worked the rest of his life. Steel had a very recognizable style of fruit painting, perhaps best described by the biographer John Haslem: "Steele painted both flowers and insects well, but as a painter of fruit on china he had no superior, if, indeed, he had any equal in his day... His grouping is harmonious, the light and shade well managed, each piece of fruit is well rounded, and the outline softened and blended into the one next to it, each partaking of the reflected colour from the other.".

Royal Crown Derby Porcelain
Founded in 1750 by Andrew Planche and William Duesbury in Derby, England, the Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company is one of the oldest original English manufacturers of fine bone china. Dating to the Georgian era, it has operated for more than 265 years.
In 1761, the company, then called Derby Porcelain, created its first commemorative piece for the coronation of King George III. In 1775, King George III recognized the uniqueness and high quality of Derby Porcelain, giving the company the honor of using a crown on its back stamp. Queen Victoria gave further honors to the porcelain manufacturer in 1890, when she awarded the company a royal warrant and bestowed upon it the title of “The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company.”
In the years following the first royal appointment, the company employed some of its finest artistic creators, such as watercolor landscape painter Zachariah Boreman; flower painters William Billingsley, William Pegg and Walter Withers; and figure painters Richard Askew and James Banford. The company produced the most sought-after collectible pieces in its history under the direction of William Duesbury II. He died at 34 and his full vision for the company went unrealized; it subsequently entered a period of decline.
In 1811, Robert Bloor revived the company by employing excellent painters and producing exquisite serving pieces that featured the Japanese Imari style of bold colors and lavish details. The popular design continues to be produced today. Modern pieces such as the paperweight collection also remain in demand more than 40 years after their introduction.
Under the creative control of different partners over time, the company has had three main locations. Its current base of operations is in Derby, where it continues to produce fine ceramics and decorative collectibles.

Wonderful Rare Matched Pair of Early English Regency Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Pot Pourri or Pastile Burners of traditional form. First quarter of the Nineteenth Century.
Lavishly hand decorated in Imari palette with colours of Iron Red and Cobalt Blue with gilt on an off-white ground, each rim with four projecting Lion's heads ending on four paw feet on a shaped base.
Condition: Superb condition for such early items, light wear to gilding at high points and some staining inside, evidence of gilt overpainting on one cover, see image. Both bases with iron red mark for circa 1815.
Diameter: (entire) 5.5" (14cm). Height: 6" (15.25cm).
