A remarkable Art Deco Murano Art Glass Vase in the Roman Revival tradition, featuring a striking scavo (archaeological) surface finish that gives the vessel the appearance of an ancient amphora unearthed from antiquity. This intentionally weathered, excavated texture is a signature technique developed by Murano glass masters in the early 20th century and closely associated with the experimental work of Barovier
Toso and other avant-garde Venetian furnaces.
Hand-blown in a deep amber-brown glass, the vase showcases sculptural applied handles with spiked or barbed detailing, along with multiple raspberry prunts—each individually hot-worked and tooled by hand. These tactile decorative elements are hallmarks of early Murano Archaeological Revival design, inspired by Roman glassware forms and classical Mediterranean vessels.
The naturally mottled coloration, mineral-like surface deposits, and subtle iridescence enhance the vase’s ancient aesthetic.
