About the Item
A beautifully hand-painted Art Nouveau terracotta vase by L. Hjorth, Denmark, dating from the 1920s. The vase features a richly decorative bird motif encircling the body, rendered in earthy tones of deep brown, cream, muted green, and soft red. The stylized birds and geometric banding reflect a harmonious blend of Art Nouveau aesthetics with Nordic folk and classical influences characteristic of Danish ceramics from this period.
The vase with model no. 95 is finely potted with an elegant baluster form, a gently flared neck, and carefully articulated painted borders that accentuate its silhouette. Executed in matte-glazed terracotta, the surface displays subtle tonal variation and hand-painted detail throughout, underscoring its artisanal quality.
The underside bears the impressed L. Hjorth workshop mark and model number, consistent with early 20th-century production from the renowned Bornholm ceramic studio. L. Hjorth is celebrated for high-quality decorative wares that combine traditional craftsmanship with progressive design.

In the 1850s at the island of Bornholm in Denmark the small terracotta factory "L. Hjort" specialized in producing terracotta earthenware items. The factory had great success internationally, and already by 1880 Hjorth's articles were sold in the big department stores of Paris, London and Berlin, and as far away as in Australia, New York and Sct. Thomas. The factory also participated in the big World Exhibitions in Altona 1869, London 1870 and 1874 as well as New Orleans 1885.
