About the Item

This striking assembled pair features two porcelain vases from East Asia—one Japanese, one Korean—each a masterful expression of 20th-century ceramic artistry, blending tradition with modernity. The smaller vase, crafted by Okura Touen (OMC Japan), is a superb example of high-quality Japanese porcelain from the late Showa era (dated 1983 on the underside). Hand-decorated with a lyrical plum blossom motif in brown and black enamel, its composition is anchored by a bold crescent moon in burnished gold, evoking classic Japanese aesthetics of nature and transience (wabi-sabi). The shape is gently rounded, with a graceful flare at the lip and delicate gilt rim accenting. The larger vase is of Korean origin, signed on the underside with the mark 신뢰 ("Shinrae" or “Shillye”), suggesting the work of a Korean ceramic artist or studio. The form resembles the classic Moon Jar style, here contemporized with bold calligraphy and an abstract black motif possibly representing a stylized world map or ink splash. The hand-brushed Korean Hangul text wraps rhythmically around the piece, conveying what appears to be a poetic or philosophical passage—common in contemporary Korean ceramics inspired by Buddhist or Confucian themes. Both pieces are finished with soft white glazes, gold-rimmed collars, and present in excellent condition, with no visible chips or cracks. The juxtaposition of the Japanese elegance and Korean style creates a deeply harmonious pairing.
