About the Item
Large Awaji pottery vase in luminous green crackle glaze, circa 1930. This vase is in the Hu form, a shape with origins in ancient Chinese bronze vessels that was later embraced in Japanese pottery, including Awaji ware. The form is somewhat streamlined for adaptation into the 20th century Art Deco period. The glaze accentuates the vases simple form creating an almost iridescent or glowing effect across the vase’s contours. The crackle effect is produced intentionally during cooling: the glaze contracts more than the ceramic body, forming intricate, random surface networks of fine lines called crazing. This pattern adds depth and texture, contrasting with the high-gloss, monochrome field of color—a favorite technique in Art Deco design. Impressed export and kiln marks. 12" high, 8" diameter. Glaze flake at edge of footrim touched in, chipping under footrim, as shown.
