About the Item
This Vase has a Luscious Black Glaze that shows speckling and depth. An original design by Artist Helena Starcevic, it consists of 2 arcing walls with hand carved designs. The dark clay is rolled out by hand, cut to size, then stood on end and attached at the sides, leaving a deep vertical groove. It is then placed upon another piece of clay to make the bottom. The bottom is pressed up over the edge, creating a rough line and enhancing it's unique nature. Several layers of 'drawing' into the surface of the clay creates the carved design. Like the "little black dress" it goes with everything! Try white lilies, yellow tulips or orange poppies. It is heavy enough to hold tall branches and makes any floral bouquet look beautiful. Each one is made separately to ensure it's own personality and uniqueness. It can be made larger or wider as desired. Tested for water tightness before listing so NO WORRIES THERE!

Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.

This small hand built ceramic bowl is truly unique, from the rustic hand formed shape to the surface treatment. It was wood-fired in an "Anagama" kiln in Upstate New York, a traditional Japanese kiln. These kilns are made of special bricks built on a slowly slanting hillside with several firing chambers. Wood must be added to the fire over several days and nights. Heat and smoke from the ash swirls through the kiln, landing almost randomly on the work.
