About the Item
Bohemian Art Nouveau Portrait Vase in the Manner of Amphora, circa 1900
A fine Bohemian Art Nouveau pottery vase, dating to around 1900, and executed in the manner of Amphora (Riessner, Stellmacher
Kessel), Turn-Teplitz.
The vase is of amphora form with twin squared handles and a flared neck, modelled in relief with a classical female portrait framed by stylised floral and foliate decoration in the Jugendstil style. The surface is richly glazed in shades of ochre, olive and dark brown, with subtle iridescent effects and areas of gilded accent. The crackle-glazed finish and colour palette are characteristic of high-quality Central European Art Nouveau ceramics of the period. Unmarked.
An elegant and decorative example, highly evocative of the Amphora portrait series, and representative of the broader Bohemian Jugendstil tradition.
