About the Item
Katie Braida is a British sculptor and ceramic artist known for her hand-built earthenware vessels inspired by the natural rhythms of the coastal and moorland landscapes around Scarborough. After studying ceramics in Cheltenham and teaching art for over 25 years, she now works from her studio at the Old Parcels Office Artspace and leads pottery workshops. Braida’s process is intuitive—she builds with coils and slabs, allowing forms to develop organically. Her richly textured surfaces reflect elements like hedgerows, tides, and grasses, and are finished with layers of slip, oxide, and terra sigillata, creating a tactile, satin-like finish. Influenced by her daily sea swims and connection to nature, her work evokes a quiet, contemplative beauty. Braida is a Selected Member of the Craft Potters Association and regularly exhibits at major ceramics fairs across the UK. Her pieces invite both visual and physical interaction, encouraging viewers to explore subtle detail and form.
