About the Item

This sculptural bronze vase titled Mikasa is a documented work by Ikeda Masuo, one of Japan’s most influential postwar artists, internationally recognized for his work across printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and literature. The vase is characterized by a powerful architectural form with subtly asymmetrical planes and a richly patinated surface, reflecting Ikeda’s distinctive sculptural language. The composition balances mass and void, evoking both ancient vessel forms and modernist abstraction. The surface treatment enhances the depth of the bronze, allowing light to interact with the contours and edges of the piece. This work was produced in March 1991 (Heisei 3) and belongs to a strictly limited edition of 30 examples, each individually numbered. The present piece is number 26 of 30. The vase is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako and an official certificate of authenticity, which includes the artist’s photograph, full work details, and edition information. And if the futurists no longer wanted to have any relationship with the past but to concentrate on the dynamic present, lupo horiokami, with his art, seems to want to focus on the theme of continuous impermanence.
