Born in Florence, Italy in 1915. He began his studies in 1927, at the age of 12, at the Instituto d’Arte Porta Romana, studying with Carlo Guerrini, Bruno Innocenti, Gianni Vignette, and Libero Andreotti. In 1934 he became artistic director in Perugia, later establishing his own workshop in Florence where his works were received in greatness amplified by his success at the Florentine Arts and Crafts Exhibit in 1937.

This featured ceramic piece from 1935 above is a beautifully carved stoneware vase decorated with an equestrian scene with human figures. These figures transcend their own bodies and become mutual beings in each turn of innocence and desire, beneath the trees and by the mountains they stand together. It stands 14” h x 8 1/8”w and is signed by the artist, inscribed made in Italy.

His accomplishments and dedication were endless. He was an artist, a teacher, and part of the Italian Resistance during a tumultuous time in Italy’s history. His works later took on a Cubist and Etruscan approach stylized with exemplary structure and enamelled surfaces. In 1970 he founded the International School of Ceramics. The artist died in 2011 but his vast legacy lives on.

His works are found throughout the world and in public and private collections including, The Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Tokyo’s Museum of Modern Art, the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, the National Bargello Museum, and the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe at the Uffizi in Florence. Marcello Fantoni
Marcello Fantoni was a Florentine artist who specialized in ceramics. He studied at the Art Institute in Florence, where Libero Andreotti and Bruno Innocenti were his sculpting professors and Gianni Vagnetti was his figurative art professor. Fantoni began to work as a ceramist in 1934, opening his factory in 1936. After the Second World War, he became very successful, and his works are held in some of the world's most important museums (from the USA to Japan).
