Made by Louis Lourioux in Foecy, France, c. 1920s.

Louis Lourioux (1874–1930) was a French ceramist whose work elegantly bridged the lush curves of Art Nouveau and the refined geometry of early Art Déco. Born Camille Louis Lourioux in Saint‑Laurent in central France, he grew up immersed in the rich ceramic traditions of the Berry region, particularly in Foëcy, an area long celebrated for its faience and earthenware. By his mid‑twenties, Lourioux was already directing the porcelain factory of Legros, Buchon
Lourioux alongside his father, laying the foundation for a career that would leave a lasting mark on French ceramics.
Around 1902, at the height of the Art Nouveau movement, Lourioux began creating pieces in stoneware and porcelain that celebrated nature, with flowing organic forms, intricate motifs, and richly colored enamels. His talent and innovation earned him early recognition, and in 1906 he was named Officier d’Académie for his contributions as an art ceramist. He surrounded himself with skilled collaborators, including porcelain painters and sculptors, fostering a creative environment that produced technically sophisticated and aesthetically bold limited-edition works.
As the 1910s and 1920s progressed, Lourioux’s style evolved toward Art Déco, embracing cleaner lines, geometric patterns, and a more subtle palette of glazes, while maintaining the technical mastery for which he was known. His stoneware and porcelain works demonstrated not only elegance in form but also remarkable innovation in high-firing “grand feu” glazes. Recognition came through prestigious exhibitions, including the Salon d’Automne and the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925, where pieces like his vase Soir de fête secured his reputation as one of France’s leading ceramists.
Tragically, Lourioux’s career was cut short by a car accident in 1930, but his legacy endured. The factory he had directed continued under family stewardship, and his pieces became sought-after examples of early 20th-century French ceramics. Today, Louis Lourioux is celebrated for merging technical innovation with artistic vision, moving seamlessly from the naturalistic elegance of Art Nouveau to the modernist clarity of Art Déco, leaving behind works that remain admired for their craftsmanship, beauty, and historical significance.
