About the Item

This large ceramic floor vase, model “Paprika,” designed by Anna-Lisa Thomson and produced by Upsala Ekeby in Sweden during the 1950s, is a stunning example of mid-century Scandinavian ceramic design. The vase features an elongated, tapered form with a textured surface that combines both unglazed and glazed ceramic finishes. The upper portion of the vase is covered in a matte brown surface, while the lower section is adorned with vertically arranged relief decorations in the shape of elongated leaves, finished in an off-white glaze with fine black incised lines. The contrast between the raw, earthy brown surface and the detailed white relief creates a sculptural effect that highlights the organic inspiration typical of Scandinavian modern design. This design choice not only emphasizes the natural textures and forms found in nature but also adds depth and visual interest to the piece. The dynamic texture and carefully executed detailing of the vase make it a striking work of art. Anna-Lisa Thomson (1905–1952), a Swedish ceramicist known for her nature-inspired designs, created some of Upsala Ekeby’s most recognizable pieces during her time with the company from 1933 until her passing. The “Paprika” series is one of her most celebrated works, admired for its modernist aesthetic and unique texture. Upsala Ekeby, one of Sweden’s most influential ceramic manufacturers during the 20th century, produced high-quality decorative ceramics that remain highly collectible today. The “Paprika” vase is a testament to the company’s dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. The vase is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of wear consistent with its age, further adding to its authenticity and charm. The dimensions of the vase are 22 cm (8.7 inches) in diameter and 52 cm (20.5 inches) in height, making it an impressive and elegant addition to any space, whether displayed as a decorative object or used as a functional vase.
