About the Item

Ceramic vase by Mado Jolain. Incised signature under the base Signed. France, 1950s Mado Jolain was born in Paris in 1921. During the German Occupation of France in World War II, she enrolled at the Paris School of Decorative Arts, immersing herself in the creative environment despite the difficult circumstances. She also attended the renowned drawing and sculpture workshops of La Grande Chaumière, a hub for artists in Montparnasse. It was there that she met René Legrand, a fellow artist who would later shift his focus more fully to painting. Around this time, Jolain became intrigued by the growing interest in ceramics, a field that had begun to attract attention even before the war. Motivated by this emerging enthusiasm, she conducted her first experiments with clay in the kiln of a utilitarian ceramics workshop located on rue d'Alésia. These early trials marked the beginning of her deep engagement with ceramics and laid the foundation for her future artistic practice. In 1946, Mado Jolain and René Legrand were married and settled in Montrouge, a suburb just south of Paris. René established his painting studio there, while Mado continued to develop her ceramic work in a nearby workshop in the 14th arrondissement. It was René who fired some of their first collaborative ceramic pieces. The couple drew much of their inspiration from popular art, which held a prominent place in the decorative arts movement of the post-war years. They frequently visited the Dijon Museum and the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, where they found inspiration in the forms and functionality of traditional, everyday pottery. By 1948, Mado Jolain's work had begun to attract public attention. Her creations were exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Ateliers d'Art Décoratifs and also featured in L’objet 1948, a pivotal post-war exhibition held at Galerie Denise Breteau on rue Bonaparte in Paris. This marked an important milestone in her career, signaling her emergence as a notable figure in the French decorative arts scene.
