About the Item

A bespoken ceramic vase in stemmed cylindrical form by Otto Natzler (1908-2007) made in 1990. The stoneware vase showcases a distinctive glaze on the black surface, achieved with a copper metallic crater reduction firing. The surface, as a result, appears volcanic like, with a unique crusty texture embedded with patches of gold and orange iridescence. Inside of the stem foot, the piece was signed and dated to underside 'Otto Natzler 1990' with impressed artist's cipher 'ON VIII' and archive number 'X575'. The vase is best appreciated under dim angled light under which the shimmering glaze reveals its subtle and magical beauty. Otto Natzler was an Austrian American potter who escaped from Vienna with his wife Gertrud (1908-1971) in 1938. For the next decades until Gertrud/s death, the couple worked in the studio together and produced some of the most admired Modern pottery in a wide range of form and glaze. Otton continued to work until his old age and never ceased to explore new forms and innovative glaze.

Wood-Fired Ceramic Vase by Paul Chaleff
By Paul Chaleff
Located in Atlanta, GA
A stoneware vase by Paul Chaleff (1947-) made in 1984. Chaleff is known for his wood fired ceramic vessel without glaze or sometimes natural ash glaze. The vase on offer is of a highly geometrical form with handcut multifaceted lower body that rises and morphs into a rounded upper body with two hand-molded ears above the shoulder. The surface shows nice firing color variations due to the iron oxidation in the kiln and also carved lines left intentionally by the artist. It is marked with the artist's incised signature and date 84. This piece has a very strong Japanese wabi-sabi appeal which is the aesthetic influence of the artist's work and makes a visually arresting center piece for any interior. "Paul Chaleff is known for his large-scale wood fired ceramic sculptures and vessels. He also created a large body of wheel thrown functional vessels. His vessels are strongly influenced by Japanese pottery, especially the work of one of Japan’s National Living Treasures, Takeshi Nakazato. Chaleff was one of the first American potters using a Japanese style Anagama kiln and became a leader in the introduction of this form of wood-burning kiln. In 1989, he began a regular collaboration with the British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro. Over a period of thirteen years, they created nearly 50 works, both figurative and abstract. Caro’s sculpture has had direct influence on Chaleff’s work as has the sculpture of Isamu Noguchi, and the ceramics of John Mason...

Ceramic Vase with Bespoken Glaze by Makoto Yabe
By Makoto Yabe
Located in Atlanta, GA
Made by Japanese ceramic artist Makoto Yabe (1947-2005), this stoneware vase features a globular body supported by a round pedestal foot. A similarly shaped neck extends to a rimmed mouth opening. Robust in form with thick wall, the vase is noted for its irregular cloved form. The surface is covered in a beige-yellow glaze, on top of which, dark brown strokes and thick white feldspar slip were artistically applied in a splashed and washed pattern. Together with some random shallow incision lines, they form an abstract painting with textured surface where some slip forms small droplets at the end of the stroke. The work was created in traditional Japanese manner and reflects the beauty of Wabi Sabi, a Zen aesthetic for the imperfect perfection. The base was incised with the artist's cipher. "Makoto Yabe's work beautifully exemplifies the transmission of Japanese ceramics to the West. Born in Fukushima, Japan, Yabe began studying ceramics in Kyoto at the age of nine. He completed his training at the age of 24, with a four-year apprenticeship under Jinmatsu Uno and Sango Uno. Yabe then came to Boston, where he was an integral member of the local ceramic community, yet he maintained his Japanese roots. As an instructor of ceramics, Yabe worked in the Boston area at numerous schools and universities, touching the lives of all his students and expanding their knowledge and appreciation of studio ceramics." Early Tall Ceramic Vase with Unique Glaze by Brother Thomas Bezanson
By Brother Thomas Bezanson
Located in Atlanta, GA
An early ceramic vase in a cylinder form by potter Brother Thomas Bezanson (1929-2007). Unusually tall at 21.75 inches, the vase strikes the viewer with its slender silouette with a tapering neck and mouth opening. What is extraordinary about this piece is the complex glaze Bezanson applied on the surface. Three vertical black glaze stripes are featured around the surface. On one side, stacks of horizontal finger-like marks were placed on a brown and silvery iridescent background, characterized as "Honan tenmoku" glaze. The other side, the glaze took on a brilliant silver oxidation in a mottled effect. The top conical portion is largely covered with a thick and oily "black olive" glaze, which is dripping down in high saturation. Circles surrounding the rim was less iron-saturated, forming a more orderly visual border. In close range, the different glazes across the vase displays subtle changes of shimmering, iridescent and textured effects and are visually mesmerizing. Bezanson's ceramic and glaze techniques was rooted in Asian ceramic tradition but utterly modern looking. The vase was marked on the base "Benedictine Monks Weston Vermont", "^60 BRENER" and Bezanson's decipher as shown. The decipher indicated that this vase was made in Weston VT circa 1965-1970, same period of another vase with similar glaze effect in our gallery (shown in the last photo), showcasing the highly sophisticated techniques Bezanson mastered and used fluidly in his ceramic work. Brother Thomas Bezanson (1929-2007) was a Canadian born artist and Benedictine monk primarily known for his porcelain pottery and mastery of complex glazes. Strongly influenced by Asian pottery, often adapting traditional Chinese and Japanese pottery methods and materials to his work. He is renowned for his original glaze recipes and perfect forms and always sought to create something new and beautiful. His exacting standards made for the shattering of over 80% of each firing. One "rescued" piece however is now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His estate is represented by Pucker Gallery...
