About the Item
Originally used for fermenting rice or sorghum into vinegar, this earthenware vessel from the early 20th century is coated inside and out with a thick, dark glaze. The inky black glaze sheets and pools over the jar's textured sides, lingering on each imperfection with beautiful color variegation.
Subtle ridges and indentations throughout suggest the jar was fashioned by coiling flattened ropes of clay and then tapped with a paddle to the desired shape. The large jar exemplifies the timeless appeal of handcrafted pottery and is a wonderful addition to the home as a grand centerpiece vessel.
