About the Item
A rare set of four handblown crystal thorn vases, crafted in Czechoslovakia circa 1890, in the late Victorian period. Each vase is individually formed, with a cylindrical body and irregular splayed base, punctuated by applied clear glass thorns that spiral around the surface in a twisting, organic rhythm.
The thorn detailing is expressive and irregular, clearly manipulated by hand while the glass was still malleable—resulting in slight variations across the set, enhancing their unique character. The clear crystal has excellent clarity, catching and diffusing light across the multiple textures.
Stylistically, the vases are closely aligned with the celebrated thorn vases produced by John Walsh Walsh in England during the same era. However, their slightly more exaggerated form and Bohemian provenance suggest Czech production, most likely by one of the skilled glasshouses exporting decorative wares to the British market at the time.
Each vase measures approximately 15.5 cm in height and 7 cm in diameter. The condition is good for their age: several of the applied thorns are chipped or softened, which is typical for pieces of this type, and not immediately noticeable due to the overall dynamic surface.
These work beautifully as bud vases, grouped sculptural objects, or as an unusual accent in a curated glass collection.
