About the Item
Colin Pearson early unique stoneware handled vessel with matte crystalline glaze in blue and white. Signed and numbered P39.
Pearson was born in London and studied painting at Goldsmiths College from 1947 to 1952. He discovered ceramics during his final year. After that, he worked with Ray Finch at Winchcombe and, in 1955, assisted David Leach in establishing the Carmelite Friars Pottery in Aylesford. Pearson took over as manager when Leach left to set up the Lowerdown Pottery in 1956. Initially, Pearson focused on producing domestic ware, but around 1971, he began to concentrate on creating individual works. He is particularly known for his "winged" vases, which are inspired, in part, by ancient Chinese bronzes. These works vary significantly in both their materials and glazes.
