Showa Period Circa 1940
From our Japanese collection, we are pleased to offer this Antique Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Vase by Tamura. The vase of tapered cylindrical form with a tight pinched neck and circular rim. The vase is decorated with a cream base glaze enamel with a vibrant contemporary butterfly and blossoming flower worked in both wired and wireless cloisonne. The Cloisonne Enamel vase is mounted with silvered rims to the top and bottom and is signed to the base with a two character mark for Tamura. The Cloisonne Enamel vase dates to the middle of the 20th century during the Showa period circa 1940.
Tamura (Tamura-Shippo) is a Japanese cloisonne company that is located in Shippo-cho, Ama City, Aichi Prefecture. The Tamura company have been producing cloisonne enamel since 1883. Through the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the Tashio Period (1912–26) and Showa Period (1926-1989) Tamura have toned their skills as craftsmen producing highly decorative contemporary pieces with vibrant colours. They operate still today in the market and create a selection of cloisonne enamel wares ranging from jewellery to vases.
Cloisonne is a technique of decorating metalwork objects with coloured material separated by wire often made from precious metals. In the first instance the decoration is formed by creating a stencil on the metal object by affixing wires to the surface which will be visible once the product is finished allowing the artisan to craft beautiful scenes such as blossoming flowers or mythical animals by filling in the spaces with various colours.
Enamel (vitreous enamel) also known as porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 °C. The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. The word vitreous comes from the Latin vitreus, meaning “glassy”.
Showa period is an era in Japanese history following the Tashio period. The Show period dates from 1926 to 1989 which corresponds to the reign of the emperor Hirohito. The two Chinese characters in the name Showa translate as “Bright Peace” in Japanese. The Showa period was succeeded by the Heisei era (1989-2019).
Antique a collectable object such as a piece of furniture or work of art that has a high value because of its age and quality. Objects of this nature are generally considered antique at 100 plus years of age.
