About the Item

A Wedgwood Fairyland lustre vase designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones ca. 1920 and decorated with the 'Castle on a Road' pattern. Daisy Makeig-Jones is best known for the Fairyland Lustre line she created for Wedgwood, consisting of lavishly-decorated pieces which depicted fantastical scenes of her own imagination. Technically difficult to produce, these exquisite works of art were afforded by the wealthy. Wedgwood Fairyland Lustres’ whimsical, and often absurd scenes, provided an escape from a society recovering from the horrors of World War I. Upon closer inspection of this bowl in the ‘Castle on a Road’ pattern, it is easy to understand how one can find themself lost in Makeig-Jones’s designs. Dimensions: 7 3/4 in. H x 5 1/2 in. W x 5 1/2 in. D Condition: Excellent. References: Josiah Wedgwood and Sons, catalog (Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent: Josiah Wedgwood Sons, Ltd. circa 1925), model illus. plate 109. Una des Fontaines, Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre: the Work of Daisy-Makeig Jones (New York: Born-Hawes, 1975), p. 96, 158-159. Victoria Albert Museum, C.92-1988

Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
A Wedgwood Fairyland lustre bowl designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones ca. 1925 and decorated with the 'Blue Willow' pattern. The ‘Blue Willow’ pattern is timeless, inspired by 18th-century Chinese blue and white porcelains and appearing on English transferwares since the early 19th century. Thomas Minton is credited with creating the standard pattern as we know it today circa 1780; from there, all the major English potteries, and some American ones, began producing ‘Blue Willow’ transferwares...

Wedgwood Lustre Vase by Daisy Makeig-Jones
Located in Toronto, CA
This is a stunning Wedgwood lustre vase, circa 1914, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones. The flared form vase has an iridescent overglaze on a pale blue ground, and is decorated with intricately detailed, swirling dragons in gold on all four sides. The inside of the vase has a gilded border featuring Oriental scenes of pagodas and gardens, below which are four mythical birds which seem to float in magical suspension over the pale green glaze of the interior. Daisy Mekeig-Jones apprenticed at Wedgwood in 1909 and only two years later, by 1911, she had started to create her own designs at the factory. In 1913 she started designing the Oriental dragon patterns seen here, and by 1915 she had begun the Fairyland lustre ware for which she would become famous. These designs became incredibly popular and helped boost the company's success after the first world war. This beautiful vase, particularly with its fanciful bird-like creatures floating whimsically on the inside, feels like a true precursor to the Fairyland lustreware...
