About the Item

Museum-Quality Monumental Art Nouveau Cameo Glass Vase by Daum Nancy, circa 1910–1915. This exceptional and museum-worthy French Art Nouveau vase by Daum Nancy, created between 1910 and 1915, stands out not only for the refinement of its decoration but, above all, for the extraordinary architectural quality of its form. Executed on a monumental scale, the vase features a powerful baluster body with pronounced shoulders and an exceptionally rare open, corolla-shaped neck. This sculptural opening—almost floral in itself—transforms the vase into a fully three-dimensional composition. Far more than a decorative object, its form alone elevates it to the status of a museum-caliber work, conceived to be viewed in the round and to command space with authority and elegance. While the rosehip decoration is known on comparable Daum baluster vases, it is traditionally paired with a closed or constricted neck. The present example is remarkable for its open, generous mouth, a daring and uncommon design choice that enhances the naturalistic theme and gives the piece a majestic, ceremonial presence rarely encountered in surviving works. Technique and Decoration The vase was created using Daum’s most sophisticated multi-layered cameo glass technique, perfected in Nancy at the height of the Art Nouveau movement. Multiple layers of glass were double-blown, incorporating a rich chromatic ground of purple, brown, yellow, orange, and fuchsia enamels, vitrified between the layers to create exceptional depth and luminosity. The floral decoration was then drawn using Judean bitumen, a resist medium that allowed the motif to be revealed through acid etching. After immersion in an acid bath, the background developed its characteristic finely pitted, mineral surface, a hallmark of Daum’s finest production, enhancing light diffusion and giving the glass a subtly tactile quality. The cameo relief elements—flowers, stems, and leaves—were subsequently hand-enameled, displaying remarkable tonal nuances, iridescence, and painterly precision. This final stage, carried out by Daum’s master decorators, demonstrates the extraordinary technical and artistic standards achieved by the Maison in the early 20th century. Signature and Dating The vase bears the enameled shield signature “Daum Nancy + France”, a mark used between 1910 and 1915, firmly placing this work within the mature Art Nouveau period of the firm. Dimensions Height: 20.3 in. (51.5 cm) Diameter: 6.3 in. (16 cm) Founded in Nancy in 1878 by Jean Daum, the Daum glassworks rose to international prominence under the artistic leadership of his sons, Auguste and Antonin Daum. At the turn of the 20th century, Daum became one of the most important contributors to the École de Nancy, alongside figures such as Émile Gallé and Louis Majorelle. During the Art Nouveau period (circa 1895–1915), Daum distinguished itself through technical innovation, particularly in acid-etched cameo glass, enameling, wheel carving, and polychrome layering. Botanical subjects—wild flowers, foliage, and landscapes—were central to their artistic language, rendered with naturalistic sensitivity and sculptural depth. Daum’s Art Nouveau works are celebrated today for their refined craftsmanship, rich coloration, and harmonious integration of form and decoration, and are represented in major museum collections worldwide. Large, sculptural vases of this quality and scale are increasingly rare and highly sought after by collectors.
