About the Item

A very rare Doulton Burslem series ware porcelain vase decorated with golfing scenes by renowned American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson (American, 1867-1944) and dating between 1904 and 1915. The finely made vase is shaped flattened form with small handles applied to the shoulder and stands on four small molded integral feet. The vase is printed and hand painted with titled scenes to two sides against a pale yellow ground portraying an Edwardian lady playing golf. To one side she has lost her ball and there are six men trying to find it for her. The scene is titled DONT WATCH THE PLAYER. KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL. To the opposite side a lady golfer is being admired by a gentleman and is titled ONE DIFFICULTY OF THE GAME. KEEPING YOUR EYE ON THE BALL. Both scenes are signed by the artist. The vase has a green printed Royal Doulton mark to the base and is printed ‘Copyright’. In good condition.

A large and impressive Art Deco Doulton Lambeth floral decorated presentation vase made by renowned artist Vera Huggins and dated 1938. The large stoneware vase stands on a narrow round skirted foot with a wide bulbous body with a pinched neck and short everted rim. The body of the vase is decorated around the upper body with incised repeat large floral blooms set within an incised shaped border. The flowers are hand painted in tones of pink, brown and green and set against a pale green mottled ground with the borders in brown and the lower vase decorated in streaked flow blue glazes. The pattern around the top incorporates the initials E.F. along with the date 21.9.38 and believe that this was a unique presentation piece for a special event. The vase has impressed makers marks to the base and is numbered 23024 and unusually has a full Vera Huggins signature (suggesting it may have been a personal gift from her) along with assistant marks for Winnie Bowstead...
