About the Item

This distinctly shaped Delft-style polychrome vase exemplifies the bold, exuberant artistry of mid-century Velsen Delft pottery. Featuring a sculptural double-gourd silhouette variation—a form that expands generously at the shoulder and foot with a subtle pinch at the waist—it offers a dynamic profile that reads as both traditional and strikingly modern. While rooted in centuries-old Dutch ceramic tradition, the vase is not a reproduction; it channels history through the confident lens of 20th-century design. What distinguishes this piece most vividly is its radiant polychrome decoration, a signature of Velsen’s peak production in the 1950s and 1960s. Painted entirely by hand, the surface is alive with flourishing florals, fruiting vines, and perched birds, rendered in an opulent palette: cobalt blue, burnt orange, lilac, sage, ochre, wine red, and black. These bold hues reference 18th-century Delft polychrome ware, itself inspired by Chinese famille verte and Japanese Imari porcelain, yet Velsen’s interpretation is looser, more expressive—flamboyant in the best way. Founded in 1920 and reestablished in Sassenheim during WWII, Velsen was among the few postwar Dutch studios to focus on hand-painted Delft-style earthenware. This vase reflects that commitment: not merely an homage, but a forward-facing work grounded in tradition and painterly skill. Though originally decorative, the vase’s dramatic silhouette and generous scale lend it to a variety of uses—as a centerpiece on a console or sideboard, a vibrant standalone statement in an entry, or even a stylish umbrella stand anchoring a vestibule. Its balance of color, shape, and craft makes it ideal for traditional, maximalist, or bohemian interiors. The base is fully signed with the Velsen mark, along with the painter’s initials and model number.
