About the Item
Early 19th century Victorian decalomania decorative vase, made in London. This refined example of English decorative glass is formed of blown or molded glass with an antique white ground, serving as an elegant backdrop for its richly detailed interior decoration executed using the decalomania technique popular during the early Victorian period.
The interior surface is decorated with printed figural and ornamental motifs, including a noble gentleman dressed in 18th century attire, surrounded by floral sprays, scrolling foliate elements, and putti angels. These transfers were carefully applied to the interior of the vase and then fired or sealed, allowing the decoration to permanently adhere beneath the glass surface. The subject matter reflects neoclassical taste and the continued influence of 18th century romantic and allegorical imagery well into the early 19th century.
The vase is designed in a classical urn form with a gently narrowed mouth, resting on a round base, giving it strong architectural presence and balanced proportions. It measures approximately 19.5 inches high with a 10-inch body diameter.
In good condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use, including some expected loss to the interior decoration. A highly decorative and collectible example of early 19th century English Victorian decalomania glass, well suited for collectors of period glass or as a striking decorative statement in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
