About the Item

A rare and elegant early 19th century English decorative glass vase, produced in London and decorated using the decalomania technique popular during the early Victorian period. The vase is formed of blown or molded glass with an antique white ground, providing a luminous backdrop for its richly detailed interior decoration. The surface is ornamented with printed chinoiserie scenes depicting birds, butterflies, flowering branches, foliate motifs, and Asiatic figures dressed in period attire. These designs were applied as transfers to the interior surface of the vase and then fired or sealed, allowing the decoration to permanently adhere to the glass while remaining protected beneath the surface. This specialized process reflects the technical innovation and decorative sophistication of early 19th century English glassmaking. The vase is designed in a classical urn form with a gently narrowed opening, resting on a circular base, giving it balanced proportions and architectural presence. It measures approximately 15 1/4 inches high with an 8-inch body diameter. In good antique condition, with minor loss to the interior decoration consistent with age and use. A highly decorative and collectible example of Victorian decalomania glass, combining historical craftsmanship with the enduring appeal of chinoiserie design. Ideal for collectors of early English glass or as a refined statement piece in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
