About the Item

An exceptional and rare vintage Berber ceremonial vase, handcrafted circa 1930s by the female artisans of Taghzout in the Rif Mountains of Northern Morocco. This vessel stands as a particularly rare example of Beni Ouriaghel tribal ware. While the region is known for its robust, utilitarian cooking vessels, this piece is distinguished by its exceptionally delicate walls and refined, bulbous silhouette. It was originally created as part of a ceremonial bridal set, likely gifted to a bride to hold water or milk during wedding rituals—a symbol of fertility and abundance. The vase demonstrates the mastery of the "coil and scrape" technique, built entirely by hand without a potter's wheel. It is handmade by Berber women using techniques that have remained unchanged since the Neolithic era. The "oily," tactile quality of the surface is achieved through stone burnishing—a labor-intensive process where the clay is polished with a pebble before firing to create a natural, waxy sheen. The finely executed motifs are painted using natural manganese and iron oxide pigments. The geometric iconography features the traditional "fibula" (brooch) and seed motifs, symbolising protection, fertility and prosperity for the household. Made from the characteristic iron-rich clay of Taghzout, known for its durability and warm tone. As a low-fired ethnographic piece from the early 20th century, examples of this delicacy are scarce. The piece exhibits a hairline crack at the rim consistent with its age.
