About the Item

A rare example of early 20th-century ethnographic pottery from the Rif Mountains of Northern Morocco. Handcrafted circa 1930s by female artisans in the village of Taghzout, this vessel is attributed to the Beni Ouriaghel tribe. While the Rif region is historically noted for robust, heavy-walled cooking ware, this piece is distinguished by its exceptionally thin walls and refined, bulbous silhouette. This delicacy indicates it was not intended for daily utilitarian use but was created as part of a ceremonial bridal set. Three more pieces of the set are also available on our seller page. Such vessels were traditionally gifted to a bride to hold water or milk during wedding rituals, serving as symbolic containers for fertility and abundance. The vase is constructed entirely by hand using the "coil and scrape" technique, a method predating the potter's wheel that has remained unchanged in this region since the Neolithic era. The characteristic "oily" tactility of the surface is the result of stone burnishing—a labor-intensive process where the leather-hard clay is polished with a smooth pebble before firing to create a natural, waxy sheen and reduce porosity. The geometric decoration is applied using natural mineral pigments: crushed manganese (black) and iron oxide (red/brown). The design features a prominent central band of repeating lozenges (diamonds) enclosing the 'seed' motif—ancient symbols of fertility and the protective eye—flanked by traditional linear cross-hatching. Origin: Morocco (Rif Mountains / Taghzout) Date: Early 20th Century (c. 1930s) Material: Iron-rich Micaceous Clay, Manganese Iron Oxide Pigments Technique: Hand-coiled, Pit-fired Condition: Vintage ethnographic condition. Please note a stable hairline crack at the rim, consistent with the fragility of low-fired earthenware of this age. Curated by Mādda. Visit our seller page for more unique pieces.
