Delft pottery, also known as "Delftware" or "Delft Blue," is a type of Dutch faience that reached its peak popularity between the 17th and 18th centuries.
Delft pottery draws its inspiration from blue and white Chinese porcelain, which was popular in Europe in the 17th century. Delft potters tried to imitate the appearance of Chinese porcelain by using majolica, a ceramic coated with stanniferous glaze. This technique was introduced to the Netherlands from Italy in the 16th century.
Delft pottery is typically characterized by the color cobalt blue on a white background, although other colors were also used.
Decorations include floral motifs, landscapes, biblical scenes and oriental figures.
Production involved several stages, including clay shaping, firing, glazing, and decoration.
Glazing with tin oxide gives the ceramic its characteristic matte white color.
