About the Item

This refined Japanese lacquer ikebana vase dates to the Showa period and exemplifies the sophisticated decorative arts of mid-20th-century Japan. The surface is richly adorned with a harmonious combination of maki-e (gold lacquer) and raden (mother-of-pearl inlay), executed with exceptional balance and restraint. The design features stylized waterwheel motifs rendered in rhythmic, ascending arcs—an abstract yet evocative interpretation of a classical theme associated with movement, continuity, and the flow of nature. The deep black lacquer ground provides a dramatic contrast to the shimmering raden inlays, lending the piece a strong visual presence while maintaining refined elegance. The tall cylindrical form, fitted with a detachable metal handle, is well suited for seika, rikka, or contemporary ikebana arrangements. The vase functions equally well as a sculptural object, reflecting the modern sensibility that characterizes high-quality Showa-period lacquerware. The piece is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), attesting to its authenticity and intended value.
