About the Item
Green blown glass vase characterized by bulbous elements in the body molding, decorated with green, silver, and gold enamels present on both the body and neck of the vase. The enamels depict floral designs flanked by ornamental gold motifs of oriental taste. Engraved signature "Cristallerie D'Emile Galle Nancy Modele et decor deposés" in manuscript font placed within reserve below base.
Pioneer of Art Nouveau and founder of the École de Nancy, Émile Gallé (1846-1904) was a master glassmaker and brilliant designer. Gallé's first experiences in the field of enameled glass date back to the 1860s, thanks to his studies at his father's majolica factory in Saint-Clément and his participation in the 1867 World's Fair. In the early 1970s, Gallé began his personal experiments with glazes, looking for a way to eliminate the difficulties inherent in vitrification. It has been speculated in the past that he abandoned enameled pieces when his experiments with glass during the 1880s and 1890s led him to the new processes of "inlaying" and patina glass, but in fact it is certain that he continued to produce a wide range of crystal pieces enriched with enameled designs, including the vase shown here, made between 1894 and 1897. Stylistically, our vase aligns well with late 19th-century Art Nouveau production, characterized in Gallé by a strong taste for oriental culture and motifs.
The dating to the years 1894-1897 was made possible by the calligraphic writing of the engraved signature and the use of the term "glassware," employed by Émile in the mid 1890s.
