About the Item

"Rococo Revival": Large Morley Ashworth Ironstone "India Jar" Vase, Circa 1855-62 A monumental and opulent Victorian ironstone vase and cover, produced by Morley Ashworth (Hanley, Staffordshire) during the mid-19th century. This imposing vessel, originally cataloged as the "India Jar" shape, features a striking octagonal baluster form. The vase is glazed in a deep, rich cobalt blue (mazarine blue) ground, which serves as a dramatic backdrop for the elaborate hand-painted decoration. The surface is densely covered with sweeping Rococo scrolls of acanthus foliage and stylized floral urns, executed in brilliant yellow enamel and heavily accented with gilt. The vase is flanked by sculptural dragon-scroll handles, picked out in gilt-heightened yellow. The domed octagonal cover is surmounted by a distinctive finial modeled as double dolphins (or entwined koi), also finished in matching yellow and gold. The combination of the heavy ironstone body and the lavish gilding exemplifies the grandeur of mid-Victorian interior design. Markings: Attribution: While often associated with Mason's, this specific form and decoration period aligns with the Morley Ashworth partnership (successors to Francis Morley, who acquired the original Mason's molds and patterns). Condition: Good vintage condition.Shows typical age-related wear. Measurements: Height: 20 inches (50.8 cm) Width: 8 inches (20.3 cm) Depth: 8 inches (20.3 cm) Historical Context: The "India Jar" shape was originally introduced by William Ridgway in the 1840s and produced at both his Church Works and the Broad Street Works (Ridgway, Morley, Wear Co.). When Francis Morley purchased the rights to Mason’s Ironstone (specifically the patterns and molds) in the mid-19th century, he continued to produce this grand shape, often applying classic Mason's-style patterns to Ridgway forms. This vase, dating to the Morley Ashworth period (c. 1855–1862), represents the seamless blending of these two great Staffordshire ironstone lineages. (Ref: NY8671-pnr)
