About the Item
A stunning Maltese Mdina studio glass streak pattern vase by Eric Dobson and Michael Harris dating from around 1970.
Mdina glass was founded in 1968 by Michael Harris on the Island of Malta. Michael was a lecturer in industrial Glass design at the Royal College of Art in London and along with Eric Dobson moved to the island to create Malta’s first ever glass manufacturer. The designs were inspired by the Mediterranean coastline, the sandy beaches and the blue waters if the Mediterranean and the colors of sand and sea feature in many of the pieces produced at Mdina.
This quality square shaped example is heavily made standing on a narrow round flat polished base with a wide body, narrow pinched neck and wide flattened trumpet shaped round top. The body of the vase is decorated with yellow edged grainy sand-colored streaks of irregular width running vertically from the upper edge and gathering in the base of the vase. These run through a transparent sea blue tinted body. The vase is inspired by the beaches and seas around the Maltese coastline. The vase is not signed and expect an early and very fine quality example of this style of glassware.
Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market.
