About the Item

Here is a large (15.25") vase by ceramist F. Carlton Ball (1911-1992). This beauty is in a serene sky blue glaze with darker blue sgraffito decoration featuring stylized castle motifs. The vase is in excellent original condition. As you'll see in the photos, there is one side of the vase that is mottled--this happened during firing and is original to the piece. There are also some darker spots--mostly to the interior mouth of the vase that also occurred during firing. But there are no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. You'll perhaps also see some color variations within the vase--but because of the high gloss glaze, these are mostly shadows and reflections of surrounding objects. The vase is double-signed: once near the bottom of the vessel and once on the underside. Carlton Ball often collaborated with artist Aaron Bohrod. Ball would create the pottery form and Bohrod would decorate the vessel. Usually this pieces are signed by Bohrod as well, so we are unsure who did the castle sgraffito decoration. This is a large, significant vase by a well-respected American ceramist.
