A refined example of mid-century Murano glassmaking, this faceted sommerso vase was produced in Italy circa the 1960s. Executed using the traditional sommerso technique, a saturated red and yellow glass core is encased within a thick layer of clear crystal, creating pronounced optical depth and a jewel-like luminosity that shifts with changing light.
The exterior is cold-worked into sharply defined facets, giving the vase a bold geometric profile characteristic of postwar Italian design and reflecting the period’s interest in sculptural form and technical precision. Though unsigned, the vase aligns stylistically and technically with Murano workshops active during the era, including Mandruzzato, Oball, Campanella, and Seguso, all recognized for layered glass production and architectural cutting.
The form would have required careful control during both hot-working and subsequent cold-cutting stages, resulting in a piece with strong visual presence and substantial weight. The vase measures approximately 8.3 in (21 cm) in height and 2.4 in (6 cm) in diameter at its widest point.
Condition is consistent with age and use. There are a few minute edge chips along the facets, light surface wear near the rim, a fine linear scratch to one facet, and a small internal air inclusion—an inherent characteristic of hand-blown Murano glass. These do not detract from the overall clarity or sculptural impact of the piece.
