About the Item

Large, rare and impressive, this sandblasted glass vase by Franz Grosz depicts a nude male figure floating in the air -- perhaps a dancer in the midst of a leap from the stage floor -- holding a length of drapery that is fluttering in the breeze. Unlike artists working at Steuben, Orrefors and other firms creating fine engraved glass pieces in the 1930s and 40s, Grosz experimented with the use of sandblasting to create designs in glass. Most of his designs involved flowers and foliate motifs, so a nude figural piece such as this is highly unusual. Dorothy Thorpe, too, was experimenting with etched glass in the 1940s, so the Post-War period was a fertile time for experimentation in art glass making in America. Grosz was based in Queens, New York, and worked with glass blanks from the Tiffin glass company, etching them to produce a wide range of ware, including bowls, vases, plates, centerpieces, plaques, trays, cigarette boxes, picture frames, decanters and ash trays.
