About the Item
A wonderful and high quality French 19th century Grand Tour Period Onyx and Ormolu Warwick vases. This striking pair of urns are raised by a square cream colored Onyx bases with cut corners and a top quarter round Ormolu bands. The tapered plinth above has a flat top shelf where the vase sits. The Ormolu body displays richly chased Bacchic figures below the most decorative intertwining leaf and grape cluster rim with beaded and Les Oves patterns. Each side showcases magnificent intertwined handles with a fluted pattern, while also finished on the inside.
The Warwick Vase is an ancient Roman vase with Bacchic ornament that was discovered at Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli about 1771 by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish painter-antiquarian and art dealer in Rome. It was restored by order of Sir William Hamilton and passed into the collection of his nephew, George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick.
