About the Item

Large Fulvio Bianconi A Fasce Orizzontali Vase for Cenedese Murano Art Glass executed in the Pulegoso technique with a slight scavo finish. Pulegoso is a type of glass with many bubbles that was developed in the 1920s by Napoleone Martinuzzi. The name comes from the Italian dialect word pulega, which means bubble. This exquisite example features the "a fasce orizzontali" design - a timeless Fulvio Bianconi signature incorporating polychrome bands in red, blue and teal against a white background that exemplifies mid-century modern sophistication. Pulegoso glass is made by adding sodium bicarbonate or petrol to molten glass that releases gas bubbles. The bubbles make the glass semiopaque and give it an irregular texture. Pulegoso glass was first exhibited in 1928 at the Venice Biennale.
