About the Item
A very large and impressive Art Deco George Clews
Co, Tunstall, Chameleon Ware hand painted vase with leaves dating from around 1925. The finely potted earthenware vase stands raised on a narrow-skirted rim with recessed base and is of large bulbous shape tapering to a wide shoulder with a funnel shaped neck and everted rim. The body of the vase is hand painted with large singular stylised leaves painted in shades of brown repeated four times around the body and set in a black outline within a white surround and set against a blue mottled ground. A formal geometrical patterned rim is painted around the should and neck of the vase. This significant and impressive vase may well have been an exhibition piece and is numbered 28/116 with printed makers marks and with painted initials L.R. whom we believe was probably the artist. The vase is also impressed 235. A rare opportunity to acquire such a magnificent and large example.
Provenance: acquired in the UK Art Market.
A stunning example offered in good condition with usual signs of wear associated with age and use.
