About the Item

This large and decorative vase was produced by the prestigious Faïencerie de Gien, one of the most important French ceramic manufactories since its foundation in 1821. The piece is crafted in faience and decorated with the celebrated “Cachemire” pattern, a richly polychrome design introduced in the 20th century and inspired by Indian and Persian textiles. The vase adopts a tall amphora form, enhanced by two elongated cobalt-blue handles shaped as stylized knots, giving the piece a sculptural presence. Its surface is entirely covered with a hand-painted floral composition, punctuated by a large paisley (cachemire) motif that lends movement and exotic character to the décor. The bold colors—reds, greens, yellows, and blues—stand out vividly against the creamy white ground, a hallmark of Gien’s distinctive faience. The underside bears the “Gien France” mark with château logo, used between 1960 and 1971, allowing us to date the piece to this precise period. The “Cachemire” design was one of Gien’s most successful decorative themes, reflecting the post-war taste for Orientalist and historic revival patterns, reinterpreted in a distinctly French style. With its generous size, elegant form, and vibrant decoration, this Cachemire vase is both a striking decorative centerpiece and a fine collectible example of mid-20th-century French faience. It remains in very good condition, with only minor wear consistent with age.
