Giorgio Spertini (1877-1908) Ceramic amphora vase decorated with blue glaze. Gold-plated brass frame with whip-line pattern with applied flowers. Made for Italian Ceramic Company Laveno (1856-1965) Epoch: 1903 Materials: ceramic and gold-plated brass Measurements: height 46, diameter 25 cm Marks: Mark at the base "23 SCI 03" Conservation: very good condition, slight signs of use. Exhibited in several museums and in the Collection of MIDeC - International Museum of Ceramic Design Published in the cover of: Terraroli, The Decorative Arts in Lombardy in the Modern Age (1780-1940), SKira, 1999 The vase was designed in the Art Nouveau style with a metal mount reminiscent of the works of Viennese Secessionism and, more generally, instances of Jugendstil taste. Its innovative design, however, is based on long research done in those years by Giorgio Spertini himself and Giorgi Ceragioli, who in 1900 had designed vases, also for SCI in Laveno, in glazed ceramic with gilded bronze inserts. The artistic research carried out by Spertini in these years, which culminated precisely in the vase that takes its name from him, fully adhered to the Art Nouveau language and contributed to the spread of an aesthetic culture of a broader artistic movement, which spread rapidly in Italy in the last decade of the nineteenth century. In the past decades, however, the judgment on Art Nouveau art and, more generally, applied arts, has changed profoundly, recognizing in Spertini's work one of the most important epigones of turn-of-the-century ceramics and the Laveno factory. This work, then, constitutes one of the milestones in the long journey of twentieth-century art, also made famous by artist, architect and ceramist Galileo Chini. In recent years, this work has been mentioned or displayed in significant exhibitions, among which the exhibition entitled "Fragile Beauty. Italian Art Ceramics between Art Nouveau and Informal," held from April 6 to August 17, 2014 at the Pinacoteca Cantonale Giovanni Züst in Rancate (Mendrisio, Switzerland).
