About the Item

A ceramic vase with glaze decoration by Michel Lanos (1926-2005). 22.8 x 11 x 9.8 inches. Perfect original decorations. Artist monogram under the base. Circa 1990-2000. Unique piece. - Born in Paris in 1926, Michel Lanos discovered ceramics in Biot in the early 1950s, shortly after his marriage. He learned the craft in a family workshop, where he quickly developed a sensitive and physical approach to wheel-throwing, which he regarded as a search for balance. It was also in this village of potters that he met the artist Fernand Léger and the ceramist Roland Brice. After collaborating with renowned ceramists such as Mado Jolain in Montrouge and Madeleine Jolly in Jean Cocteau’s studio, he opened his own workshop in Bondy in 1970, before settling in Fontenay-sous-Bois in 1976. There, he fully explored stoneware and high-temperature glazes, with a particular fondness for blacks, oxblood reds, and deep blues, gradually freeing himself from utilitarian concerns to embrace more liberated, sculptural forms. His production oscillates between functional pieces and sculptural forms with vibrant colors, and he himself claimed affiliation with the CoBrA movement. His work, imbued with a spirit of freedom, engages in a tactile and meditative dialogue with clay. Michel Lanos passed away in 2005. His totems, CoBrA-inspired sculptures, and glazed platters bear witness to his enduring attachment to free gesture and experimentation.
