About the Item

A beautiful Art Deco / Swedish Grace glass vase. Designed by Simon Gate and made by Orrefors, Sweden, 1930s. The model was shown for the first time at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition. Excellent condition. Impressed with makers mark 'Orrefors'. Simon Gate, born Carl Oscar Simon Jonson on 10 March 1883 in Södra Fågelås, was a Swedish glass artist, painter and designer. He is best known for his work at the Orrefors glassworks, where he played a crucial role in giving the company's art glass and utility glass an artistically high quality. Gate began his career as a portrait and landscape painter before joining the Orrefors glassworks in 1916. Together with Edward Hald, who joined Orrefors a year later, they created a groundbreaking glass design that made Orrefors world famous. Gate and Hald collaborated with master glassblower Knut Bergqvist and experimented with a technique called over-flow glass. By layering several layers of colored glass on top of each other, they developed a new method for creating unique glass with multi-colored decorations. These glasses were called Graal glass and were exclusive works of art with patterns of plant ornaments and figures inside the glass walls. In addition to Graalglas, Gate also created a series of utility glasses in a new style that broke with the previously popular cut and patterned glass. He used simple, lush shapes and decorated them with loops of colored glass around the mouth and footplates. This stylistic change was a radical departure from the previous design and demonstrated Gate's ability to experiment and explore new paths in glass art. Gate was one of the people who contributed to "Swedish grace" and was instrumental in Swedish glass design achieving an international breakthrough.
