About the Item

A nice vintage art vase, handmade by the talented designer Bengt Orup for Johansfors glasbruk, Sweden. The colour is vibrant emerald green and it has a nice texture, made in the 1960's and it is in a very good condition. Johansfors Glasbruk In 1889, Frans Oskar Israelsson and August Ahrens founded a glass painting workshop in the former dairy at Sliparedammen in Johansfors. Business went so brilliantly that two years later they took the plunge and started their own production of glass. Johansfors glass factory was inaugurated in August 1891. In the first decades, production consisted mainly of pressed and driven glass for household use, but ground and painted glass was also produced. During the 1920s, glass began to be manufactured under the designation "beautiful everyday goods". Influences came from Ellen Key and the Arts and Crafts movement in England and involved letting artists design beautiful but cheap everyday objects for the working class as well as art glass. During the crisis years of the 1930s, a lot of work was done with colored glass in the colors sepia, amber, green, black and yellow to hide the impure glass mass. Bengt Orup was the mill's artistic director during the years 1952–73. In the 1950s, he made the stylish Stripe, Strikt, Party and Garden tableware with painted stripes in different colours. Other employed artists were Erik Hennix, Margareta Hennix, Ingegerd Råman, Bertil Vallien and Christopher Ramsey. Bengt Orup became the artistic director of Johansfor's glass factory in Småland, Sweden in 1951, where he was active until 1962 and also later from 1967-1973. In the interim period 1963-1966, he was connected to the newly started glass cabin in Hyllinge outside Helsinborg. He designed everyday glass, such as tableware bowls, vases, decanters. Several have become classics such as Strict, Party, Stripe, Chevalier and are today sought-after collectors' items. Orup also signed magnificent unique art glass pieces and sculptures. His career as a glass artist culminated in 1968 when he was invited as a visiting professor at the Royal College of Art in London.
