About the Item
Ilse Margareta Claesson (1907–1999), later known as Ilse Claesson Roempke, was a groundbreaking Swedish ceramist, painter and textile artist, celebrated for her modernist designs rooted in early 20th‑century Scandinavian style .
Born in Gothenburg, she trained from 1923 to 1928 at the Slöjdföreningens skola, then joined the famed Rörstrand porcelain factory. There she created the iconic Art Deco‑inspired “Serie V” (V‑series) flintware: elegant vases, bowls and dishes in bold geometric motifs glazed in black and green (and other color variants) that became commercial best‑sellers and a defining look of 1930s Swedish decorative art .
In 1936, when Rörstrand relocated to Lidköping, Claesson left to focus on family. After her second marriage to Sven Roempke, she pivoted to textile art: designing patterns printed by her husband’s firm—her “Ilse‑sömmen” and runners became popular via mail order, blending folk art and modern design .
She also taught at her alma mater (from 1945), created painted wooden folk‑art figures, and painted on canvas later in life. Her work is represented in Sweden’s Nationalmuseum and remains admired for its timeless, sophisticated blend of geometry, color and form .
In under 200 words, Claesson emerges as a visionary: trained artist, industrial designer, textile innovator, educator and painter who left an enduring mark on Swedish art and design.
