About the Item

This elegant hand-hammered copper vase was crafted by Gyokusendō, a renowned workshop celebrated for its mastery of Tsuiki copperware—a traditional Japanese metalworking technique with over 200 years of history. Tsuiki originated in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, and is a highly specialized process in which copper is shaped entirely by hand through repeated hammering. Rather than stretching, the metal gradually contracts and is raised into form using a wide variety of tools, including numerous types of toriguchi (iron rods). As the copper hardens during hammering, it is repeatedly annealed in a furnace to restore softness, allowing the artisan to continue shaping the vessel. The process concludes with the application of patination and coloring, integrating generations of craftsmanship into the finished piece. The vase presents a refined silhouette with a subtly textured surface and a rich, natural patina. It remains in good overall condition, showing only minor surface abrasions consistent with age and careful use. Dimensions: Width: 15 cm; Height: 19 cm (Width: 5.9 in; Height: 7.5 in) Weight: 600 g (1.3 lb) With original signed wooden box: 1.1 kg (2.4 lb) ⸻ International Buyers — Please Note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping costs.
