About the Item

A beautifully hand-painted majolica amphora from Orvieto, dating to the 1960s and signed “NP / Orvieto” on the underside. Richly decorated with vibrant arabesque motifs and warm, saturated colors, this piece is an evocative example of Umbria’s historic ceramic tradition. Orvieto has been renowned for its ceramic production since the Middle Ages — its distinctive “Orvieto ware” has been documented as early as the 13th century. The finely incised graffito work (“graffito e dipinto a mano”) and the layered polychrome glazes seen here reflect that legacy, blending craftsmanship, color, and ornamental detail with remarkable finesse. The vase features elegant twin handles, a rounded body enriched with scrolling foliage, and a wide 14.5 cm mouth, making it ideal for displaying fresh flowers or branches. Its size — 25 cm tall and 20 cm across including the handles — makes it versatile: perfect as a centerpiece in a Provençal-inspired dining room, as an accent in a contemporary interior, or as a collectible decorative object on its own. Signed “NP / Orvieto” on the underside, likely referring to the artisan decorator active in one of Orvieto’s historic ceramic workshops in the 1960s. designation strongly situate this piece within the renowned local ceramic ateliers active during the mid-20th century.
