About the Item

Hernán Sanz — Picasso-Style Ceramic Vase, Talleres Pedro Mercedes, Cuenca, Spain, circa 1970 Unique Picasso-inspired ceramic vase by Hernán Sanz, produced in the Pedro Mercedes workshops in Cuenca, Spain, circa 1970. Hand-incised and signed, with bold abstract decoration. This striking ceramic vase, measuring 24 cm high × 13 cm wide × 13 cm deep, was created in the celebrated Pedro Mercedes workshops in Cuenca during the 1970s and signed by the artist Hernán Sanz. Decorated with bold sgraffito patterns in the manner of Pablo Picasso’s Vallauris ceramics, the vase combines traditional craftsmanship with modernist inspiration. The decoration features a dense interplay of abstract and figurative motifs incised into the surface, revealing the terracotta body beneath the black slip. This dynamic technique is characteristic of the Cuenca school of ceramics, particularly under the influence of master ceramist Pedro Mercedes (1921–2008), who was renowned for his innovative adaptation of sgraffito decoration and for training generations of artists in his Cuenca workshops. Vases like this exemplify the cross-pollination of Spanish ceramic traditions with the modernist impulse of Picasso’s mid-century ceramic output, creating highly collectible works that bridge folk craft and avant-garde aesthetics.
