About the Item

An exceptionally elaborate Japanese cloisonné enamel vase, standing 10 inches high and distinguished by its extraordinary density of design and technical refinement. The surface is divided into complex geometric and fan shaped panels, each meticulously filled with richly colored scenes that include birds in flight and at rest, butterflies, flowering branches, lotus, grasses, and auspicious motifs, all set against alternating grounds of deep black, vivid turquoise blue, and jewel toned patterned fields. The interplay of matte and glossy enamels, combined with extensive use of fine wirework, creates remarkable depth and visual movement throughout the composition. The upper neck is encircled by a continuous band of mythical creatures and scrolling forms on a dark ground, lending a powerful framing element to the otherwise kaleidoscopic surface. Across the body, individual vignettes are rendered with painterly sensitivity, particularly in the feathers of the birds, the veining of leaves, and the subtle gradation of color within the floral elements. The precision of the cloisons, the complexity of the color palette, and the seamless transitions between panels reflect a high level of workshop sophistication and careful planning. Vases of this type exemplify the height of Japanese cloisonné production, where technical virtuosity and decorative exuberance were deliberately combined to create objects of visual richness and sustained interest from every angle. The sheer variety of motifs and the flawless integration of figural, botanical, and abstract elements make this vase a standout example of its genre, suitable for a serious private collection or refined decorative display.
