About the Item
Important Stoneware bowl by Eva Staehr Nielsen for Saxbo Keramik, Denmark. The bowl was exhibited at the Prins Eugens Museum Waldesmarsudde and owned by prominent Swedish Architect Robert Berghagen.
Saxbo Keramik, a Danish pottery workshop, was founded in 1930 by Nathalie Krebs and operated until 1968. Known for its high-quality stoneware and innovative glazes, Saxbo gained international recognition, especially for the collaboration between Krebs and designer Eva Stæhr-Nielsen. The workshop also featured designs by other prominent artists like Axel Salto and Jais Nielsen. The Prins Eugens Museum in Stockholm is an important art museum established by the artist son of the Swedish royal family.
With an exhibition label from the Prins Eugens Museum in Stockholm which includes the name of the collector, architect Robert Berghagen.
Prins Eugen’s Waldemarsudde is one of Sweden’s most popular art museums, beautifully situated on Djurgården in Stockholm. The museum consists of a main building, the Mansion, built in 1903–1905 as a residence for Prince Eugen (1865–1947), and a gallery building that was added in 1913. Architect Ferdinand Boberg designed both buildings in close cooperation with Prince Eugen. The prince, son of King Oscar II and Queen Sophia, was one of the leading landscape painters of his time. He was also an important art collector and a central figure in the Swedish cultural world.
Robert Berghagen , the collector of this Danish bowl, was born 7 June 1892 in Östersund and died 24 April 1987 in Katarina parish in Stockholm. He was a Swedish architect . He was the uncle of Lasse Berghagen .
Biography
Berghagen, who was the son of the tile stove maker Nils Nilsson and Karin Nilsson, studied at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm from 1916 to 1918, was employed by Ivar Tengbom from 1919 to 1921 and then ran his own business from 1923. He was director of the Society for Homeland Conservation's construction agency from 1932 to 1934, managing director of the Handicraft Lottery in Stockholm and in the Handicraft Association from 1934 to 1959. Berghagen was vice chairman of the board of Konstfack from 1945 to 1954 (chairman from 1954 to 1962), board member of the Swedish Crafts Association from 1936 to 1959, vice chairman of the church council and member of the church council in Katarina parish from 1950 to 1968 and member of the city council in Stockholm from 1942 to 1946.
Robert Berghagen joined the functionalist ideals early on and designed the now demolished Svenska Pressbyrån facility on Blekholmen in the new style in 1928. [ 3 ] The same style was also followed by the Hantverksinstitutet , address Renstiernas gata 12 / Sandbacksgatan 10 in Stockholm (1939–1941). In 1984 he was appointed honorary doctor at Umeå University .
