About the Item
An Italian Neoclassical Grand Tour Empire Period Patinated Bronze
Sienna Marble Campagna Shaped Vase/Centerpiece
The vase/centerpiece is composed as a campana-shaped vase rising from a tall Sienna marble plinth. The vase features a broad, outward-flaring mouth with a flat rim enclosed by a continuous beaded border and an egg and dart molding. The upper register curves gently into the lower bowl, which is articulated with vertical lobes running evenly around the circumference. Two handles are mounted on opposite sides, each formed as bundled shafts that curve outward and attach to beautiful cast Lion head masks placed at the junction between the body and the shoulder. These Lion Head masks have defined facial features and serve as the primary ornamental anchors for the handles.
The body sits on a circular foot supported by a fluted stem. The foot is bordered by a wreath-like band composed of interlaced leaves arranged in a tight pattern. The entire bronze surface carries a patination that emphasizes the transitions between the molded elements, giving clarity to the rim, handles, swelling body, and foot. The overall proportions of the urn are balanced, with the flared mouth countered by the structured lower bowl and the raised placement on the stem.
Below the bronze portion, the Sienna marble plinth provides a substantial base. The marble block is square in profile and displays natural veining typical of Sienna stone. A stepped bronze molding separates the vase from the plinth, featuring a leaf band that visually links the metalwork with the stone support. The size of the plinth contributes significantly to the height of the piece, creating a pronounced vertical emphasis suited for placement as a central decorative element.
This form corresponds to Italian Neoclassical Grand Tour production, where patinated bronze vases modeled after ancient prototypes were mounted on colored marble bases. The combination of molded bronze work, defined handles, and solid Sienna marble illustrates the construction quality associated with these Italian workshops.
